What you can buildGames
Game art
The panel beside a game where its art, 3D models, sounds, settings and high scores are changed, on a computer and on a phone.
Game art is where a game's look and sound are changed after it is built, without writing a request for each thing. Open it with the Game art button over the preview. It opens beside the game, so you can see each change in the game as you make it.
What it holds depends on the game:
| 2D game with characters | 2D game without characters | 3D game | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pictures | Characters, backgrounds and objects, drawn with AI or uploaded | Backgrounds and objects | 3D models from a free library |
| Levels | Levels and Level look, on a platformer or a top-down game | ||
| Also | Sounds, Settings and Scores | Sounds, Settings and Scores | Sounds, Settings and Scores |
How the pictures are drawn is on 2D games, and how the models are changed is on 3D games. This page covers what every game has.
Where it opens
On a computer Game art opens on the right of the game, so the game keeps its full height. Move under the game, a button in the panel's header, puts it under the game instead, and Move to the right puts it back. Setherion remembers which you picked.
- Make it bigger or smaller by dragging its edge, the one that touches the game.
- Make it as big as it can be with the arrow button beside Close, or a double-click on its edge. The game always stays in view, so you still see what you are changing.
- Close it with Close, or by dragging its edge all the way back. A small Game art tab stays on the game's edge: click it, or drag it out, to open the panel again.
On a phone
Game art opens under the game. To give it the whole screen, press Hide the game beside Close, or drag its edge to the top. Show the game brings the game back.
While you type a description or a name, the bar at the foot of the panel steps aside, so the keyboard leaves room to write. It comes back when you tap outside the box.
The tabs
A row of tabs under the title shows one part at a time, or All of them. A game only has the tabs it uses: Characters (called Fighters in a fighting game), Backgrounds (or Arenas), Objects (or Weapons and objects in a run and gun game), Level look, Levels, Sounds, Settings and Scores. A 3D game has its models in place of the pictures, in tabs by kind, like Characters, Vehicles and Scenery.
The number beside a tab says how many it holds.
Add, rename and remove
The last card of each part is a dashed Add a character, Add a background or Add an object. Give it a name and a few words about how it looks. Adding one is free until it is drawn.
A new card says Not in the game yet: the game does not use it until you ask. Use in game writes that request in the chat box for you, for example to bring the new enemy into the second level. Check it, add to it, and send it. Nothing is sent from Game art.
- Rename a card by clicking its name. If the game still shows the old name, ask for the new one in the chat.
- Remove is on a card the game does not use yet. Credits spent drawing it are not given back.
Draw the rest
The bar at the foot of the panel has one button for everything that is not drawn yet, with the total in credits on it: Draw all with AI before anything is drawn, then Draw the rest with AI. A drawing that fails gives its credits back, and its card says Try again.
Beside it, Drawing your own? has a guide, a blank grid and a finished example, for drawing a character in any app and uploading it. See Drawing your own.
The look
The menu at the top of the panel sets one look for every picture in the game: HD painted, Pixel art or Digitized actor. Pick one and press Use this look. Pictures already drawn with AI are drawn again in the new look, at their price, and the menu tells you which before you choose. Going back to the first look brings back what was drawn in it, free. Your own drawings stay as they are.
The looks are compared on 2D games.
Sounds
A game's sounds and music are in Sounds: effects, voices and music from a free library, yours to use in what you publish.
- Play a sound to hear it.
- Change sound opens the library, with the sounds that suit this one first. Pick one and it is in the game at once, free.
- Add a sound opens the library too, with a tab For this game and a search box. Pick a sound and give it its name in the game, for example "Door creak".
- Rename a sound by clicking its name.
A new sound says Not in the game yet. Use in game asks when it plays: pick a moment, like when the player jumps or when a coin is collected, or write your own, and Put in chat writes the request in the chat box for you to check and send. Remove is on a sound the game does not play yet.
Settings
Every game lists the numbers it plays with, three to six of them: how fast it goes, the lives, a time limit, how many enemies come. Open Settings, then move a slider or type a number. It takes no credits, and the game starts again with the new value. Reset puts back the one it was built with.
To tune something that is not there yet, ask in the chat, for example "add a setting for the jump height". A game built before settings existed has none: Ask in the chat on its Settings tab starts the request for you.
Scores
A game that keeps a score has a board every player shares. When a game ends, the player types a name once and sees the top ten and their own place. Nobody needs an account. A time works too, where the fastest wins.
Scores shows every player's best. A game that runs in a browser cannot prove a score was really played, so taking off one that cannot be real is up to you: the cross beside it, then Remove. Clear board empties it. Games you play in the preview count too, so you may want to clear the board before you publish.
Offline, or before the app is saved, the game keeps each player's best on their own device. To add a board to a game that has none, ask in the chat, for example "add a high-score board", or use Ask in the chat on its Scores tab.
