Publishing

Custom domains

Put your published app on a domain of your own: buy it anywhere, add two records, and press Verify Domain.

Every published app has an address like coffee-shop-ember-grain.setherion.app, free on every plan. A domain of your own, like coffeeshop.com, puts the same app under your name.

What you need

  • The domain itself. Buy it from any registrar you like: Namecheap, GoDaddy, Cloudflare, ROTLD, whoever, or through the window's own search (below). The domain stays yours whatever happens here.
  • A paid plan. The free plan has no custom domain. How many you can connect goes up with the plan.

The count is across all of your apps together, not per app. A domain and its www version count as one. When the plan has none, or all of them are in use, the window says so and the app stays live at its current address. In a shared workspace the plan that counts is the one paying for the app.

An app that is private cannot be put on a domain of its own: make it public first. See Visibility.

Connect it

Publish the app first

A domain points at something published. If the app has never been published, publish it once, then come back.

Open Connect your domain

+ Add custom domain, in the Publish window right under the address. See Publish to the web. The same window opens from Connect a custom domain once the app is live, from Manage, then Domains (which also shows the current address and whether it answers), and from Set up domain in SEO & AI search.

Write the domain

coffeeshop.com, or shop.coffeeshop.com if you want it on part of a domain you already use for something else. Write the name alone, with no https:// in front and nothing after it.

Add the records it gives you

When you click out of the box, Setherion answers with the records your domain needs. The first time, it publishes the app again so it can take a domain, which takes a moment. Add the records where you bought the domain, in its DNS settings. Each value has a button to copy it, and the table says when the values are exact.

RecordNamePoints at
A@, the domain itself216.150.1.1
CNAMEwwwcname.vercel-dns.com
TXT_vercelthe value shown on screen, when one is shown

Use the values on your screen if they differ from the ones here: they are the exact ones for your domain.

Remove any AAAA (IPv6) records the domain already has: they can block the connection.

Press Verify Domain

If the records are in place, it turns green with Domain connected! and your app is on your domain.

DNS changes are not instant. Most take a few minutes, some take hours, and a registrar can take up to two or three days to pass them around the world. Press Verify Domain again later. Nothing is lost while you wait.

What Verify Domain can answer
  • Add TXT record, with the name and value to add: the host wants proof the domain is yours.
  • DNS not propagated yet: if you have just added the records, wait a few minutes and try again.
  • This domain is not connected to this app yet: press out of the box again so the records are fetched, then add them.
  • That does not look like a domain: write it like yourdomain.com.
  • That address belongs to Setherion: names under setherion.com and setherion.app cannot be connected.
  • Publish the app first: a domain points at something published.
  • Custom domains start on the Pro plan, or your plan includes N custom domains and all of them are in use: upgrade, or free one up.

If you are stuck, the window has a link to create a support ticket.

If you have not got a domain yet

The same window has a Buy a new domain tab. Write the name you are after and press Search: it tries the name with the endings .com, .io, .app, .dev, .co, .net and .org, and tells you which are available and what each one costs a year. Buy opens Vercel in a new tab, to pay there.

A domain bought through this window needs no records at all: come back to I have a domain, write it, and it is already set up. A domain bought anywhere else needs the records above.

When nothing has to be set up

If your domain's DNS is already handled by the same host Setherion publishes through, the records are written for you and the screen says so: "Managed by Vercel, no setup needed". Press Verify Domain and that is the whole of it.

A domain for the app's letters

This is a different thing. A domain for the website decides where people open the app. A sending domain decides who its letters come from: with one, a confirmation or a password reset arrives from noreply@notify.yourcompany.com and not from "your app via Setherion". It is set up under Manage, then Cloud, then Emails. See Emails.

What cannot be connected

Names under setherion.com and setherion.app belong to Setherion, so they cannot be connected as if they were yours. Everything else that is a real domain name can.

In a shared workspace, connecting a domain is for the owner and the admins: it changes where the app lives for everybody. The plan that counts is the one paying for the app, not the plan of whoever is pressing the button.

After it works

Publishing again updates what is on your domain. To take the app down, use Take offline in Overview: the live site stops and a domain has to be connected again after you publish.
